NOTICE: Late Aug and Sept and into October is the time when baby snakes (and turtles) hatch or are born live -NONE of the Pennsylvania venomous snakes lay eggs! They have live young. So if you find eggs-they are NOT venomous snakes.
As for the NON-venomous snakes they lay eggs and have live young. See the "Reptiles and Amphibians of PA" list on the right for info on who does what. >>>
Again-feel free to e-mail photos to -- tokay@ptd.net -- for identification-I will answer ASAP and don't go killing them either!!
******I know it's the time of the year when people come here especially to identify snakes.
I want to remind you that Pennsylvania only has 3 species of dangerous venomous snakes. They are listed to the Right.>>>>
(please note: Cottonmouth (Water Moccasin) Agkistrodon piscivorus are NOT NOT NOT native to Pennsylvania)
There are photos of those (and all the non-venomous snakes) in the main gallery. There are also photos comparing the venomous to the non-venomous snakes that may help you also. New Note* For you convenience I have grouped all the snakes together in the gallery-look for "Snakes: ~species name here~"
If you are still unsure-you may post photos in the forum or e-mail photos of them to me at tokay@ptd.net . I generally check my e-mail often during the day. I will answer ASAP!
PLEASE DO NOT kill a snake and then send or post a photo!!! Send and/or post photos of LIVE snakes!!! DO NOT KILL SNAKES-PERIOD!! **(I will try to ID dead snakes-such as road kills, lawn mower hits, etc. if I have to...please don't post those in the forums)***(FYI-killing snakes in general is ILLEGAL now in PA! Most have special protection regulations or a permit is required)
Thank-you!******
To date this site has 6100 plus photos.
See sub-categories for MORE photos such as different colors, close-ups, babies, eggs, and so on.
*Note-Sometimes there are photos out of place--if you see any like that (for example: a mushroom posted under spiders) The source of this problem is fixed but some photos are still out of place-still working on changing those to the right places. PLEASE let us know of any errors you come across.
